This Peter Steiner cartoon from 1993 has since entered into Internet folklore.
It demonstrates the still widely held belief that on the Internet you are completely anonymous and can therefore pretend to be anyone or anything you choose.
In the day-to-day practicality of chatrooms, forums, message-boards and the like this is the case, but the technical reality of it is that the computer you are currently using has an IP address and every site you visit knows what it is. This can be used to uniquely track your computer and discover your identity.
